TEAM 4: IoT Technologies for Africa

This is a description of Team 4 of the Nairobi INSPIRE Hackathon 2019 led by Michal Kepka as a mentor.

Sensors and especially the Internet of things (IoT) became recently popular due to the their significant importance to face challenges at various levels.

The aim of this project is to make research of available IoT networks, their coverage and available data sources in selected areas in Africa. In addition to that, the aim is to research and create overview of available open data and datasets from the sensor domain – e.g. meteorological stations, weather forecast, traffic cameras, public transport data and agriculture phenomena.

A further direction of the project will be focused on exchange formats and protocols that are used in the targeted domains. The practical work in this project will be focused on the implementation of connectors to the SensLog 2.0 application currently being used in DataBio and AFarCloud projects. These connectors will provide a middleware between sensor network / measuring unit / gateway to the sensor data storage.

Transfer technologies include:

  • GSM/4G/5G
  • LoRa
  • SigFox
  • NB-IoT
  • Others

Tasks that participants can be involved in:

  • Research of available networks and datasets
  • Implementation of connectors to the SensLog 2.0
  • Analytical tools based on data stored in the database
  • Visualisation of observations stored in the database
