Prague INSPIRE Hack 2018

The Prague INSPIRE Hackathon 2018 was held on 23–24 January 2018 at the Faculty of Economics and Management, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague. This event brought together professionals, students, freelancers, and start-ups to collaborate on innovative solutions utilising big and open data, as well as open-source technologies, with a focus on rural regions.

🎯 Objectives

  • Demonstrate the practical use of big and open data, alongside open-source tools, in real-life applications.
  • Address challenges in agriculture, spatial planning, biodiversity, climate change adaptation, the water-energy-food nexus, transport, and logistics.
  • Foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders to move scientific results into practice.

🧩 Participation

The hackathon encouraged the formation of diverse teams comprising professionals, project team members, students, start-ups, freelancers, and investors. Participants engaged in both virtual meetings prior to the event and face-to-face sessions during the hackathon to develop their projects.

🏆 Results

A jury consisting of Marie-Françoise Voidrot (Open Geospatial Consortium), Martin Pelikan (Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague), and Ondrej Svab (Czech Ministry of Transport) evaluated the projects. The top three teams were:

  1. Big Data for Fishery
    • Team Members: Karel Jedlička, Dmitrij Kozuch, Petr Uhlíř
    • Achievement: 1st Place

  1. Extension and Enrichment of SPOI Knowledge Base
    • Team Members: Raul Palma, Otakar Čerba, Stein Runar Bergheim, Raitis Berzins
    • Achievement: 2nd Place

  1. Delimiting Agro Zones
    • Team Members: Marcela Doubková, Apurva Kochar, Karel Jedlička, Karl Gutbrod, Vojtěch Lukáš, Michal Kraus
    • Achievement: 3rd Place

🏢 Organisers and Supporters

  • Plan4all: A non-profit association sustaining and enhancing the results of multiple research and innovation projects, focusing on open data related to planning activities in various specialisms such as transport, spatial and city planning, environment, and tourism.
  • Department of Information Technologies (DIT), Faculty of Economics and Management, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague: Engaged in teaching and scientific research, DIT collaborates with businesses, governments, and universities, participating in numerous domestic and international projects.
  • ESA BIC Prague: The European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre in Prague offers support to entrepreneurs and start-ups with innovative ideas for exploiting space systems, technologies, or patents to develop non-space businesses on Earth.
