dubrovnik_inspire_hackaton_2020

The Dubrovnik INSPIRE Hackathon 2020 was conducted as a fully virtual event from March to June 2020, adapting to the cancellation of the physical INSPIRE Conference due to global circumstances. Organised by Plan4all and supported by a consortium of international partners, the hackathon focused on leveraging interoperable frameworks, artificial intelligence (AI), and citizen science to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

🎯 Objectives

  • Promote collaboration and sharing of experiences in spatial data and citizen science.

  • Showcase the utilisation of spatial data and services across various application domains.

  • Support the achievement of SDGs through innovative technological solutions.

🧩 Challenges

The hackathon featured 12 distinct challenges, categorised into four thematic areas:

Citizen Science

  • Integrating INSPIRE with Citizen Science and Earth Observation authentication systems.
  • Establishing connections between Citizen Observatories resources and central catalogues.
  • Improving interoperability between methods for sharing in-situ and citizen-sourced data.
  • Developing interchangeable map compositions to support collaborative spatial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence

  • Using machine learning for the detection of land use objects.
  • Applying deep learning techniques for weather forecasting.

Sustainable Development Goals – Food Security

  • EO4Agri Ideathon: Generating ideas to enhance agricultural practices using Earth Observation data.
  • Assessing phenological events in agriculture based on Copernicus data.
  • Combining Copernicus and LPIS data in data cube services.
  • Using Sentinel-1 data and IoT technology for soil moisture analysis.

Interoperable Frameworks and Open Data

  • Traffic modelling from web browsers, exemplified by the use case of Františkovy Lázně.
  • Extending OpenLandUse by selected INSPIRE Data Themes.

🏆 Results

The hackathon concluded with a virtual presentation of results and an awards ceremony during the INSPIRE 2020 Online Conference on 11 June 2020. The top three teams recognised for their outstanding contributions were:
