Agrihub INSPIRE Hackathon 2022

The Agrihub INSPIRE Hackathon 2022, organized by Plan4all, was a fully virtual event held from April to May 2022. It focused on fostering digital innovation in agriculture by connecting research projects with farmers' needs, emphasizing developments in agriculture, the environment, geospatial applications, remote sensing, and GNSS technologies.

🧩 Challenges

The hackathon featured 16 distinct challenges, each addressing specific issues in agriculture and environmental monitoring. These challenges ranged from developing SmartAgriculture applications and analytical tools for MapWhiteBoard to integrating IoT and Earth Observation data for improved agricultural production prediction. Other challenges included creating a unified Land Use and Land Cover map for Africa (OLU4Africa), developing a new social space for geographic information sharing and education, and automating the calculation of management zones based on yield potential.

🏆 Results

After two months of collaborative work, the hackathon concluded with a final virtual event where the top projects were recognized:

  • 1st Place: Challenge #9: A new social space for geographic information sharing and education – This project developed a portal primarily for geographic data that allows easy participation of citizens, students, and others, supporting easy content creation.

  • 2nd Place: Challenge #11: Automating the calculation of management zones based on yield potential – This project focused on creating a method to prepare basemaps for farmers based on the analysis of historical imagery.

  • 3rd Place: Challenge #13: Agro Environmental Services – This project aimed to provide uptake of Copernicus and INSPIRE data to support agri-food and environmental opportunities.

These projects showcased innovative applications of AI, remote sensing, and collaborative tools in agriculture, contributing to more efficient and sustainable practices.
