Agrihub INSPIRE Hackathon 2021

Hackathon 2021

The Agrihub INSPIRE Hackathon 2021 was a fully virtual event held from October to December 2021, organized by Plan4all in collaboration with several Czech and Slovak institutions. This hackathon aimed to foster digital innovation in agriculture by connecting research projects with farmers' needs, focusing on developments in agriculture, the environment, geospatial applications, remote sensing, and GNSS technologies.

🎯 Objectives

  • Support digital innovation hubs (DIHs) in Czechia and Slovakia.
  • Bridge the gap between the farming sector and research projects.
  • Develop new innovations by building upon the results of previous hackathons.
  • Provide participants with access to an international knowledge community.

🧩 Challenges

The hackathon featured 8 distinct challenges, each addressing specific issues in agriculture and environmental monitoring:

  1. Crop Detection: Utilizing AI methods to analyze time series from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data for crop detection, benefiting advisory services, financial institutions, and the public sector.
  2. Crop Status Monitoring: Developing methods to monitor crop status based on time series analysis of Sentinel data, crop rotation, IoT inputs, and yield monitors.
  3. Agro Environmental Services: Providing uptake of Copernicus and INSPIRE data to support agri-food and environmental opportunities.
  4. Irrigation Management: Offering recommendations for integrating climatic, IoT, and Copernicus data to manage irrigation effectively.
  5. Extreme Weather: Integrating climate data, IoT, and Copernicus data to provide recommendations for managing extreme weather events.
  6. Drones Utilization for Crop Protection: Exploring the use of drones for crop monitoring and the application of pesticides and herbicides.
  7. Analysis, Processing, and Standardization of Data from Agricultural Machinery: Analyzing, processing, and standardizing data from agricultural machinery to facilitate easier utilization by farmers.
  8. Business Cases for WhiteBoard: Identifying new business cases for the utilization of MapWhiteBoard technology in various applications and solutions.

🏆 Results

After two months of collaborative work, the hackathon concluded with a final virtual event where the top projects were recognized:

  • 1st Place: Agro Environmental Services
  • 2nd Place: Analysis, Processing, and Standardization of Data from Agricultural Machinery
  • 3rd Place: Business Cases for WhiteBoard

These projects showcased innovative applications of AI, remote sensing, and collaborative tools in agriculture, contributing to more efficient and sustainable practices.
